Bad Names

cryingbabyI’m reading a book called, “Bad Baby Names” by Michael Sherrod. The authors researched U.S. census data from 1790 – 1930 and the book lists an interesting variety of really bad names coming from this data. Here are a few:

  • Cholera Peace (born in 1830)
  • Loser Louis
  • Tuna N. Fish
  • Sugar Cane
  • Ima Nutt
  • Angel Gabriel
  • Warren Peace
  • Jack Lantern

I’ve read other books about people with interesting names. In the book, “Freakonomics,” Steven Levitt describes people with names like Temptress, Amcher (named after the Albany Medical Center Hospital ER), and Loser Lane. And I have personally met some people with interesting names such as, Chuck Wood and Gil Trout.

There have been studies suggesting predictive powers of bad names; that people with “bad” names have a higher propensity to end up with “bad” lives. To me, that’s like saying people who take the elevator instead of walking the stairs have a higher propensity of being fat; there’s much more to it than that. And as Levitt surmises, “an overwhelming number of parents use a name to signal their own expectations of how successful their children will be.” As I’ve said before, the name says more about the parent than it does the child.

So, with that said, there really aren’t any “bad” names; just different. Do you know anyone with interesting names?  If so, I’d love to hear about them!

  1. I used to work for a government agency and was in constant contact with the public. We had a “Bruce Bruce” and our favorite…”Mr. Ooh La La.” Yup, and he wouldn’t answer to anything else. Interesting post!

      Hi Mindy
That’s so interesting. My husband told me he met a guy who changed his name to Modern Man. I wonder if people call him Modern or just Mod for short!

  2. Several people I know who work in hospitals say that they encountered newborns with the name “Female” pronounced “fuh mal lee.” Could this be true?

  3. Hello – thanks for stopping by my blog!

I personally know a gentleman with the full name of Richard Ball. He goes by Dick. He’s actually a reasonably successful businessman in the oil sector here in Calgary.

I think people can rise above any name, it’s only a name, not who they are, but I do wonder at the motivations of parents to name their kids weird names as if they’re trying hard to get them teased and beat up in school.

Fuh mal lee? Sounds like fraj eel eh – you know from the movie the Christmas Story? I think it’s quite possibly true. In the book Freakonomics, they talk about a child who was named Amcher. The name of the hospital where the baby was born was: Albany Medical Center Hospital Emergency Room (AMCHER).

Tatiana – it would be nice if we lived in a world where people didn’t get teased for their name. Sad to say, that just isn’t true. Thanks for sharing!
