I’m trying to cover all the bases in my fight to save the fruit on my peach tree. I’m spraying them with a spicy concoction of “eu de pepper flakes parfum” and I’m pleased to report that this seems to be having some success. I check several times throughout the day – there are squirrels in my yard, but none on the peach tree.
I don’t want to rest on my laurels though. So I did some research on techniques used by ancient cultures to increase agricultural yields. Namely? Sacrifices and Offerings. The very helpful site I found described how important it was in planning your offering to find something that meets the needs of that particular deity. For example, you wouldn’t give a sword to the goddess of love.
I conjured up a squirrel god in my head and since my goal was to coax him or her to look favorably upon my plight, it seemed the best offering would be peach buds. See? I’m not selfish. I am more than willing to share these peaches with the squirrels. So, see below for my offering in both pictures and verse to the squirrel god.
Homage to Squirrels
Eyes opened or closed, there you are
Eating my peaches from near and far
Plumbs and pears, you eat them too
To get my hands on some fruit, what will I do?
Resolved for peaches I remain
(I hope this quest doesn’t drive me insane!)
I offer this gift of tender peach buds
(Ignore the fact that they’re technically duds)
From this tray I beg of you to munch
For the fruit of the tree packs a peppery punch
So if in my yard it’s you I see
That’s perfectly fine, just stay out of my tree!
I know, not necessarily Pulitzer material, but you have to start somewhere! My next step might be some kind of peach tree preservation dance, but I think I’ll have to get a little more desperate to do that.![]()

Oh Marly ~ Never knew squirrels liked peaches as I just planted a peach tree last year and as of this comment, there are several little bitty peaches on it! I’ll have to keep a watchful eye out for squirrels BUT maybe there are enough feral cats around? Good luck!

From what I can tell squirrels are not a problem for everyone who has fruit trees. But if they are? They are difficult to deal with. I THINK I’ve found the solution – thanks to someone who commented on an earlier post. I’ve been making a hot pepper concoction and spraying on the tree every other day or so and that’s been working. I’m just hoping the fruit doesn’t turn out tasting spicy! I’ll keep you posted.

Hey Marly, your poem is so cute! I could never write a funny poem like that, so, to me at least, it is Pulitzer prize material.
By the way, it seems like the hot peppery stuff would have to be in high concentrations near the root system to make them taste that way, but I don’t know. Maybe I’m underestimating the absorbency of skin…?

That does make sense and I do hope you’re right! You should see my notes from trying to come up with this poem. I’m sure it was a sad scene to observe, but I got through it. It gets fun after you get into the groove of it!

ROFL – You’re absolutely adorable!! And, this, is a very positive and novel approach. Btw, I love the ode (of sorts). How can anyone not love a line like “Ignore the fact that they’re technically duds”?!?

I love that you think I’m adorable because I FEEL really selfish. I really want some of those peaches and I’m willing to write poems to squirrels to get them! How crazy is that? But the peaches are now bigger than I’ve ever seen them on this tree – the hot sauce is working! I hope to have a post on peach pie one of these days…and peach jam…peach bread…peach punch. Oh wait, where am I?

Marly you are just too funny, thanks for the giggle. I was wondering if we were going to hear more about your peach eating visitors.

So far my peaches are further along than I have ever seen them. They’re even starting to turn a little red in spot. But I have to stay on top of it. Between the squirrels and the birds, Coco (my dog) and I are busy. We have to make it…just a little bit longer!
