Hi Kathleen - I'm so glad to see I have company in my squirrel-hating adventures! OK. I've got to do some deep breathing here to stay calm.

I would most definitely be ok with cutting out around the nibbled parts except those little guys pick the fruit before it's evenly remotely edible. They whittle away at the green fruit to get at the seeds.

I raise my fist in the air in Colbert fashion and yell, "Squirrels!!"

You're not the first person to complain about squirrels taking cute little bites of fruit (I suspect we wouldn't mind if they stole a few pears, apples, or whatever, but it's those little bites from nearly every piece of fruit that cause us so much irritation. Here's my question: would it be so terrible to eat the fruit if you washed it well and cut away the portion around the bites? A lot of food in this country gets wasted because we are accustomed to only accepting perfect produce.

HAHAHAHA! I cracked up when I read the title of this post!

Squirrels are not only hazardous to fruit but also to trees. The little varmints stripped the bark off my redwoods and oaks and even our bay trees. Gnawing down to the cambium layer, these frenzied critters killed everything from where they stripped, up. It was a nightmare. Solution: owls. We have a couple resident owls and then our closest neighbor put up owl boxes. This provided food for owls and helped save our trees from destruction. The squirrels still live in the woods but are not competing for food so we see far less tree damage.

BTW, Inspirational Eve sent me ;)

Ooh, you squirrly squirrels are getting to me. Hey, have you ever noticed that the word squirrels looks kind of weird when you're typing it? Or maybe that's some kind of hypnotic, squirrels taking-over-the-world kind of trance I'm in!

Oh, I like pigeons. They're so cute. OMG! Now I know how those people feel who respond saying they like squirrels. I may have to rethink my life!

I think whenever someone implies "eating like a bird" means you don't eat much...hasn't watched birds eat. They can really go through it. Maybe your parents should try my plastic bottle trick. I think it would definitely work with birds. I am waiting yet to see if the squirrels will figure out how to whittle away at the plastic. Fingers crossed!!

Those birds are really smart! My neighbor told me that she saw a group of them around her bird feeder once but she didn't know why because they were too big for the feeder. Then she looked up and saw that one was on the feeder, flapping its wings twisting the feeder this way and that. The others were at the bottom eating up the bird feed that was flying out of the swinging feeder. That's pretty smart!

I think we're on to something. Maybe the squirrels and the black birds are plotting a plan!!

The way that you feel about squirrels is the way that I feel about blackbirds...they are the only bird that you can turn around when you are out in your garden and find beadily watching you...they are smart...TOO smart for their own good! I bet squirrels are doing the very same thing...be afraid...be VERY afraid!
